Summaries of Sessions at Government 2010

Philip Virgo on Government 2010
Posted by: | CommentsPhilip Virgo made a superb contribution to our session on Government and The Internet at Government 2010 Live from London on Thursday. He has written a blog post about it over on Computer Weekly.
I enjoyed Government 2010 on Thursday despite the tunnel vision of enthusiasts who believe the Internet changes everything but will nonetheless be much the same in 2015 as it is today. That may, unfortunately, be true in the UK where the Digital Britain vision is still only for one-way video-streaming rather than the “competing inter-active, broadcast quality video networks to the home” that was the vision of the last Government for 2002.
Many Thanks

Conservatives Will Axe Timms Tax on Telephone Lines
Posted by: | CommentsTwo central planks of the Digital Britain Bill will be axed by the Conservatives if they come into power according to reports in today’s media.
According to the Daily Telegraph the Shadow Culture Secretary, Jeremy Hunt, “would reverse proposals in the Government’s Digital Britain bill and may even tear up the BBC’s royal charter.”
Mr Hunt said that his party would abolish the intended 50p a month tax on telephone lines to provide £175m a year towards broadband for all UK homes “as soon as possible” after the election. This proposed tax may well be introduced before the next general election by the Minister for Digital Britain, Stephen Timms.
He also pledged to reverse plans to make the BBC share £130m of its license fee with other broadcasters.
(Adam Afriyie MP, Shadow Minister for Innovation and Science, will be speaking at Government 2010 on Thursday).
